An Italian musician and computer technician claims to have uncovered musical notes encoded in Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper,” raising the possibility that the Renaissance genius might have left behind a somber composition to accompany the scene depicted in the 15th-century wall painting.

By drawing the five lines of a musical staff across the painting, the loaves of bread on the table as well as the hands of Jesus and the Apostles could each represent a musical note.

Russian Elections November 27, 2007

A banner outside the Kremlin. It reads, “United Russia Moscow.”
The AP wrote a great synopsis for all those wondering about the upcoming Russian elections.
WHO’S VOTING: 107 million people eligible to cast ballots for one of 11 parties to fill 450 seats in parliament’s lower house, State Duma. Polls predict United Russia, Kremlin-backed party whose ticket is topped by President Vladimir Putin, will win as many as 80 percent of seats.
WHO’S WATCHING: Officials from several international groups will monitor the vote, but none from Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, whose election reports are considered authoritative in West. OSCE blames excessive Russian restrictions; Moscow accuses Washington of pressuring the organization.
WHAT’S AT STAKE: Vote will be less a competitive election and more a referendum on Putin’s nearly eight-year presidency. If United Russia achieves expected overwhelming sweep, Kremlin could take that as mandate for Putin to lead Russia in some capacity after his second term ends next year.

Россия и Путин (Russia and Putin) November 21, 2007

Russia certainly has been making headlines more and more over the past year. Here’s one quote from Putin this week:
If the current trends continues and if the economic growth rate remains the same, Russia could become one of the five leading economies in the world within ten years. And we will surely accomplish this.

That’s exciting news. I welcome it. But the “we” that Putin uses bothers me. Is that collective Russians? Or Putin and Russia? Things will definitely get interesting come December 2nd as Russia has parliamentary elections.
